The AFCommerce Project
Although AFCommerce is released under the AFCommerce Free Public License Agreement, we do enforce our copyright rights concerning the AFCommerce solution. This means that, while you have considerable freedom to modify and redistribute AFCommerce, there are conditions placed on the AFCommerce copyright notices.
The AFCommerce copyright announcement displayed on the Administration Tool can not be removed, or may only be appropriately modified.
It is not the intention of the AFCommerce Administration Tool copyright announcement to claim rights or contest your rights to work written entirely by you; rather, the intent is to exercise the right to control the distribution of derivative or collective works based on AFCommerce.
Please note that the AFCommerce Administration Tool copyright announcement must still exist regardless if the default AFCommerce-copyrighted Administration Tool theme has been modified.
The text link "Powered by AFCommerce.com", displayed on both the Administration Tool and online store is mandatory and must be displayed.
Although AFCommerce is released under the AFCommerce Free Public License Agreement, we do enforce our trademark rights concerning the AFCommerce name and logo. This means that, while you have considerable freedom to modify and redistribute AFCommerce, there are restrictions placed on the usage of the AFCommerce name and logo.
Redistributing Or Offering Unmodified Versions Of AFCommerce
The AFCommerce name and logo must be used if you are redistributing or offering unmodified versions of AFCommerce as made available on the AFCommerce support site (http://www.afcommerce.com).
This provision is intended to cover situations like distributing AFCommerce on software/magazine CDs and hosting providers offering AFCommerce as an e-commerce solution.
"Unmodified" means without any changes made whatsoever, which includes the integration of contributions not available as standard features.
Linking To The AFCommerce Support Site
The AFCommerce support site must be linked or referenced to when using the AFCommerce name or logo.
The address of the AFCommerce support site is: http://www.afcommerce.com/
Why Trademarks Are Important
Trademarks are important because they help to prevent confusion in the marketplace by distinguishing one entity's products and services from the products and services of another.
For example, when a user sees the AFCommerce mark on the AFCommerce software, the user understands that AFCommerce has either created or endorsed that product, and that the product is subject to the quality control standards of AFCommerce for that product.
If anyone other than AFCommerce were to use an AFCommerce mark to promote a service, users could be misled into thinking that the unauthorized person's products or services were created or endorsed by AFCommerce, or that those products or services met the quality control standards of AFCommerce.
Trademarks And The AFCommerce Free Public License Agreement
AFCommerce Free Public License Agreement permits third parties to use and redistribute the underlying software under certain conditions. Such use and/or redistribution of AFCommerce software products are welcomed by AFCommerce, but must display the AFCommerce logo.
The AFCommerce Free Public License Agreement does not provide any license or right to use an AFCommerce mark in any form or media. Thus, although a AFCommerce Free Public License Agreement licensee may redistribute the underlying software, a AFCommerce Free Public License Agreement licensee may not use an AFCommerce mark in doing so that does not conform to the AFCommerce trademark policy without written permission of AFCommerce.
By adhering to the AFCommerce trademark policy, you help AFCommerce to prevent confusion in the marketplace and to protect and enhance the value and integrity of its solutions and marks. AFCommerce appreciates your cooperation in this effort.
