When PayPal purchased the Payflow Pro, their strength as the leading payment solution was increased greatly. Since PayPal also has their Website Payments Pro payment gateway, you have 2 options when choosing to add a payment form directly on to your website. PayPal also improved the Payflow Pro significantly when they added the ability to use the PayPal merchant account with the Payflow Pro, so now you may use Payflow Pro and not need an internet merchant account with another bank. This helps online merchants since only PayPal knows how ecommerce businesses work, and has more tools than anyone to keep you safe and secure.

There are 2 main reasons you would choose to use Payflow Pro instead of PayPal Website Payments Pro. The first is that Payflow Pro can still be used with an internet merchant account if you already have one, or for some reasons can not use PayPal's merchant account. The second reason is if you need to do reference transactions, which are payment transactions that are automated, based on a previous payment transaction used with the same credit card. The most common use for a reference transaction is when using some type of billing system, that will charge a customer's credit card on a regular basis (monthly, yearly, etc). PayPal Standard and Payflow Link Payment Gateways

These 2 payment gateways are included free with the AFCommerce shopping cart, and may be used at any time by setting them up inside your admin area. Both of these payment gateways are called "3rd party" payment solutions, which means that your customers will leave your website to enter their credit card information. After their payment has been made, they are then returned to your website for a receipt and email confirmation. PayPal standard is the most used payment gateway in the world because it is free, and includes the PayPal merchant account, which is also free and is popular because PayPal truly understands how ecommerce payments should be handled.

The downside to using 3rd party payment gateways is that since they are free, customers will sometimes worry about the creditibility of you, the merchant, since anyone can accept payments using them. You may have noticed that large companies always have some type of custom payment forms, or more advanced 3rd party systems (for example, Express Checkout) on their websites showing their customers that they have invested more money and effort in to tailoring their checkout process. Customers also feel safer when they remain on the same website for the entire checkout process, especially on the final confirmation page where their credit card will be charged and their products sent to them.
