How to Photograph Clothing for Online Stores
Clothing photography presents unique challenges compared to photographing solid objects. Fabric wrinkles, drapes, folds, and reflects light differently depending on material composition. A cotton t-shirt, a silk blouse, and a leather jacket each require different styling and lighting approaches to look their best. The display method matters too: the same dress photographed flat on a table, on a mannequin, and on a model tells three different stories to the shopper.
Step 1: Prepare the Garment
Garment preparation takes more time than the actual photography and makes a bigger difference in the final image quality. Start by steaming every piece thoroughly. A handheld garment steamer ($25 to $40) is essential equipment for clothing sellers. Wrinkles in product photos communicate carelessness and make garments look used or cheap. Steam the front, back, sleeves, collar, and any areas that fold during storage.
After steaming, lint roll the entire surface. Dark fabrics show lint, pet hair, and fiber dust that are invisible to the naked eye but glaringly obvious when the image is viewed at full resolution on a large screen. Light fabrics show dark particles just as prominently.
Check for loose threads, misaligned buttons, twisted seams, and any tags or pins you do not want visible. Straighten labels if they will appear in the shot. Fold or pin fabric in the back to create a tailored look if the garment is too large for the mannequin (a common issue when photographing sample sizes). Use small binder clips or pins on the back side, hidden from camera view, to create a fitted appearance.
Step 2: Choose Your Display Method
Flat Lay: The garment is laid flat on a surface and photographed from directly above. Best for t-shirts, casual wear, baby clothes, accessories, and items where the silhouette matters more than three-dimensional drape. Flat lay is the simplest method (no mannequin or model needed) and produces consistent results across a catalog. The limitation is that flat clothing does not show how the garment looks when worn, which matters for structured items like blazers, coats, and dresses.
Invisible (Ghost) Mannequin: The garment is placed on a mannequin, photographed, and then the mannequin is removed in editing to create the appearance of an invisible body wearing the garment. This shows the garment's shape and drape in 3D without the distraction of a mannequin or the cost of a model. Ghost mannequin photography is the industry standard for fashion ecommerce. The technique requires photographing both the exterior (garment on mannequin, front) and the interior (garment turned inside-out on mannequin, showing the inside collar and inner lining), then compositing them in editing.
Hanger: The garment hangs on a wall-mounted hook or a freestanding hanger rack. Simple and fast, but hangers create shoulder bumps on knit fabrics, do not show fit below the shoulders, and can make garments look limp. Acceptable for casual and fast fashion stores, but ghost mannequin or on-model is preferred for brands positioning as mid-range or premium.
On-Model: A person wears the garment and poses for the camera. This is the gold standard for showing fit, drape, movement, and real-world appearance. On-model photography communicates size and proportion better than any other method. The cost is higher (model fee, potential hair/makeup costs, more complex lighting), but the conversion rate improvement typically justifies the investment for fashion brands.
Step 3: Light for Fabric Texture
Clothing photography needs soft, even lighting that reveals fabric texture without creating distracting shadows. Two softboxes at 45-degree angles on either side of the garment, at equal power, is the standard setup. The softbox diffusion creates gentle gradients across the fabric surface that show the material's character: the weave of cotton, the sheen of silk, the nap of velvet, the grain of leather.
Avoid direct, undiffused lights for clothing. Hard light creates sharp shadows in every fold and wrinkle, exaggerating imperfections and making the garment look harsh. If you are using LED panels without softbox attachments, bounce the light off a large white surface (wall, ceiling, foam board) instead of pointing it directly at the garment.
For dark fabrics (black, navy, charcoal), add a rim light or edge light from behind to separate the garment's outline from the background. Without edge separation, dark clothing on a white background can lose definition at the edges, making the silhouette look undefined.
For shiny or satin fabrics, position your lights at wider angles (60 to 90 degrees from the camera axis) to reduce specular highlights. Shiny fabrics reflect light sources directly, and lights positioned near the camera create hot spots that blow out detail and make the fabric look wet. Wider angles send the reflections away from the camera and produce a softer, more natural sheen.
Step 4: Capture All Required Views
At minimum, every clothing listing needs: front view (showing the full garment from neckline to hem), back view (same framing as front), and at least one detail shot (fabric texture, label, button detail, print close-up, or unique design element). Most successful clothing listings include 5 to 8 images.
Additional recommended shots: side view showing the garment's profile, a close-up of the fabric weave at high magnification, a shot showing any closures (buttons, zipper, snaps), a flat lay of the garment with complementary accessories (belt, bag, shoes), and if possible, an on-model or lifestyle shot showing the garment being worn.
For the ghost mannequin composite, you need the standard front shot (garment on mannequin), the inside-out shot (garment flipped inside-out, placed back on the mannequin, showing the interior neckline and collar area), and optionally a back shot (garment on mannequin from behind). These images are combined in editing to create the floating garment effect.
Step 5: Edit for Accurate Color and Clean Presentation
Color accuracy is the single most important editing priority for clothing photography. A shopper who orders a navy shirt and receives a black shirt returns it. A shopper who orders a "dusty rose" blouse and receives one that looks pink returns it. Your photos need to match reality as closely as possible.
Calibrate your monitor if you are editing on a desktop. Consumer monitors often display colors slightly warmer or cooler than accurate. A hardware calibration device ($100 to $200) ensures your monitor shows true colors, but at minimum, compare your edited images on multiple screens (laptop, phone, tablet) to check that the color looks consistent across devices.
In editing, set white balance so any white elements (labels, stitching, background) are truly neutral. Then evaluate the garment's dominant color against the physical garment under the same lighting. Adjust saturation and hue gently if needed, but resist the temptation to make colors more vibrant than they actually are. The goal is accuracy, not appeal.
For wrinkle cleanup, use the healing or clone stamp tool sparingly. Remove only wrinkles that are artifacts of the photography process (caused by how the garment was placed on the mannequin), not wrinkles that the customer would see in real life. Over-smoothing fabric in editing creates an artificial look that misrepresents the product.
Ghost Mannequin Editing Walkthrough
The ghost mannequin (or invisible mannequin) technique creates the illusion of a garment being worn by an invisible person. Here is the editing process:
- Open the front mannequin shot and the inside-out collar shot in your editor (Photoshop, GIMP, or Photoroom).
- In the front shot, carefully select and delete the visible mannequin (neck, arms poking through, any visible mannequin below the garment hem). This leaves the garment floating with an empty neckline area.
- From the inside-out shot, select just the inner collar and neckline area. Copy and paste it behind the garment in the front shot, positioning it to fill the empty neckline.
- Blend the edges where the two images meet using masking and feathering so the transition is invisible.
- Clean up the background to pure white and adjust shadows beneath the garment for a natural grounded appearance.
This process takes 5 to 15 minutes per garment in Photoshop or GIMP. Some AI tools (Photoroom, Pixelcut) offer automated ghost mannequin effects that handle simple garments in seconds, though complex necklines and layered garments usually need manual refinement.
Fabric-Specific Tips
Cotton and linen: These fabrics wrinkle easily and show every fold in photos. Steam immediately before shooting and shoot quickly before new wrinkles form. Use moderate front lighting to show the natural texture of the weave.
Silk and satin: Highly reflective surfaces require wider light placement to control specular highlights. Handle with clean hands or cotton gloves to avoid fingerprint marks. Silk picks up body oil instantly and it shows in photos as dull spots.
Denim: Denim photographs well with slightly directional lighting that accentuates the texture and fading patterns. Show close-ups of the denim weave, rivets, and stitching as detail shots.
Knitwear: Knits stretch and sag on hangers, so flat lay or mannequin display works best. Steam lightly because aggressive steaming can flatten the knit texture. Show the knit pattern in a close-up shot.
Leather and faux leather: These materials pick up every fingerprint and scratch. Clean with a leather wipe before shooting. Use side lighting to show the grain and texture. Highlight any patina or natural variation as a feature, not a flaw.
Steam every garment until wrinkle-free, choose the display method that shows fit and drape best for that specific garment type, and prioritize color accuracy in editing above all other adjustments. Accurate clothing photos that show real color, real texture, and real fit reduce your return rate by showing shoppers exactly what they will receive.
