How to Get Ungated in Restricted Amazon Categories

Amazon restricts certain categories and brands to prevent counterfeit products, ensure quality standards, and protect brand reputations. Getting "ungated" means gaining Amazon's approval to sell in these restricted areas. Most ungating applications require invoices from authorized wholesale suppliers showing at least 10 units of the restricted product. Some categories require additional documentation like safety certifications, letters of authorization from the brand, or compliance certificates. The process typically takes 1 to 7 days from application submission.

Why Categories Are Restricted

Amazon gates categories for several reasons. Product safety categories like Grocery, Health and Personal Care, and Baby Products require restrictions because counterfeit or substandard products in these categories could harm consumers. High-value categories like Jewelry and Watches are restricted to prevent fraud. Brand-specific restrictions protect brands that have requested Amazon limit third-party sellers to authorized retailers only. The number of restricted categories and brands has grown every year as more brands seek control over their Amazon distribution channels.

Category restrictions apply at different levels. Some restrictions are category-wide, meaning you need approval to sell anything in that category. Others are brand-specific, meaning you can sell in the broader category but need additional approval for specific brands. Others are ASIN-specific, restricting individual products. When you scan a product with the Amazon Seller App and see "Listing limitations apply," the restriction could be at any of these levels.

Step-by-Step Ungating Process

Step 1: Check your current restrictions.
In Seller Central, go to Inventory, then Add a Product, and search for items in the category you want to sell in. If the listing shows "Apply to sell" or "Listing limitations apply," you need ungating. Note the specific category or brand name, as your application must address the exact restriction. Some sellers find that Amazon auto-ungates their account for certain categories after they have established a track record of good seller performance, so check periodically even if you were previously restricted.
Step 2: Find an approved wholesale supplier.
Amazon requires invoices from legitimate wholesale distributors or manufacturers, not retail receipts. The invoices must come from a business with verifiable contact information (Amazon sometimes calls suppliers to verify invoices). Purchase at least 10 units of a product in the restricted category from an authorized distributor. For popular ungating categories like Grocery and Topicals, wholesalers like Dollar Days, Wholesale Grocers, and category-specific distributors sell products in small quantities specifically suitable for ungating applications. Expect to spend $50 to $200 on inventory for the ungating purchase.
Step 3: Prepare your invoices correctly.
Your invoice must meet Amazon's requirements: printed on the supplier's business letterhead, showing the supplier's full business name, address, phone number, and website. The invoice must show your business name and address exactly as they appear on your Amazon seller account. It must list the specific products purchased with quantities of at least 10 units. The invoice date must be within the last 180 days. If any information is missing or does not match your Amazon account, the application will be rejected. Some sellers request a proforma invoice from their supplier specifically formatted for Amazon's requirements.
Step 4: Submit the ungating application.
In Seller Central, navigate to the restricted product and click "Request Approval" or "Apply to sell." Upload your invoices as clear, legible PDF or JPEG files. Some categories require additional documentation: Grocery may require photos of your product storage area, Topicals may require safety data sheets, and certain brands require a letter of authorization from the brand owner. Submit all requested documentation in a single application. Amazon typically responds within 1 to 7 days.
Step 5: Handle rejections and reapply.
Rejections are common, especially on first attempts. Amazon's rejection notice usually indicates the reason: invoice not from an authorized source, information mismatch, insufficient quantity, or missing documentation. Address the specific rejection reason, obtain corrected or additional invoices, and reapply. Some categories may take 2 to 3 attempts before approval. Each attempt must include fresh, corrected documentation, not the same invoices that were previously rejected. If repeated attempts fail, consider using a different wholesale supplier whose invoices better meet Amazon's formatting requirements.

Category-Specific Requirements

Grocery and Gourmet Food

Grocery ungating requires invoices from a food wholesaler, plus your products must meet FDA requirements for food labeling. Some sellers report needing to provide photos of product storage conditions. Start with shelf-stable, non-perishable items from established food distributors. Grocery is one of the more difficult categories to get ungated in because Amazon is cautious about food safety.

Health and Personal Care / Beauty

These categories typically require invoices showing at least 10 units from a recognized beauty or health product distributor. Products may need to meet FDA cosmetic or drug labeling requirements depending on their claims. Safety data sheets may be required for products containing active ingredients. Start with well-known brands from established distributors for the easiest approval path.

Toys and Games (Holiday Season)

Amazon gates the Toys category during Q4 (typically November through January) for sellers who do not meet specific performance requirements. To sell toys during the holiday season, you generally need an established seller account with a track record of order fulfillment, low defect rates, and sufficient sales history. Meeting the requirements year-round ensures you are not locked out during the most profitable selling period.

Brand-Level Ungating

Individual brand restrictions require authorization from the brand owner or invoices from the brand's authorized distribution network. Major brands like Nike, Adidas, Lego, Apple, and Disney are extremely difficult to get ungated for because they actively restrict Amazon distribution. Mid-tier brands are more accessible, especially if you can establish a direct wholesale relationship with the brand's distribution department. Some brands will provide a Letter of Authorization if you contact them directly and demonstrate that you are a legitimate retail partner. Brand ungating is essential for wholesale sellers who want to sell established brand-name products on Amazon.
